Among the Chadic Languages (The Chadic languages constitute a language family spoken across northern Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Central African Republic and Cameroon, belonging to the Afroasiatic phylum.), Hausa is a language with largest number of speakers - spoken as a first language by about 24 million people, and as a second language by about 15 million more. Hausa Proverbs (www.hausaproverbs.com) is an initiative by an Indian - Naveen Chand (myself) to be run by millions of people like you. This website is an outcome which has come out while learning Hausa during his stay in Nigeria. Infact, he is still struggling to speak perfect Hausa!

A special word of thanks to Ishaya family, Kurya family, and all my Hausa friends who inspired me build this website. Also, thanks to a very old yet a wonderful book written in 1905 - Hausa Proverbs by George Merrick - I was able to retrieve this from internet archives.

Hausa Proverbs, although has begun by an amateur Hausa learner, is a community-managed website where people like you and people who appreciate the language Hausa make their own contribution and build it. Some provide inputs by sending us latest proverbs in usage or old proverbs that needs to be protected from extinction. Some show support by subscribing and sharing this site with their family and friends.

Hausa Proverbs is for everyone - young and old, women and men, Hausa and non-Hausa, rich and the poor. You can do many things with Hausa Proverbs. You can Read it, Enjoy it, Share it, Comment on it, React on it.. you can even send a proverb as a gift by email to someone special.

This is a website which has a vision to protect and share the rich heritage that is - Hausa!

  1. Thank you for sharing Naveen. I first learned about Hausa proverbs by reading The Acts of Faith by Iyanla Vanzant. I wanted to learn more about Hausa and your site is great for beginners.
